A Sprained Ankle Can’t Stop Me!

At home mat w/sprained ankle

February 2019

Rough month you could say. I took a spill down my steps and sprained my left ankle. It wasn’t a bad sprain but one that definitely needed tending to. I became a bit frustrated because I made a promise to myself in January – 30 minutes of exercise a day. I had started to incorporate cardio into my home workouts and it was definitely not an option while injured.

Pilates was still an option though

One amazing thing about pilates is that it does meet you where you’re at. I was at a point where I couldn’t do the long stretch series and I stayed off chair for a bit of time. However, there was still plenty of options! I could do matwork, much of the reformer repertoire, tower and baby chair. I could also work on matwork at home. Have you had an injury which set you back in other workout formats but not in pilates? How did you not allow yourself to feel defeated?

It’s hard to explain to outsiders

Anyone outside of the pilates community thought I wouldn’t be able to workout. Little did they know that modifications can be made and you avoid certain footwork. It’s difficult for them to understand how pilates is for any body. Maybe one day I’ll be able to get some of them into the studio so that they get a better grasp.
