I’m a Subtle Tucker – My First Oov Lesson

Oov

Private lesson

10 June 2019 I had my first Oov lesson. JoAnn was working on her certification for the Oov and knew it was something I had been interested. After class one night we discussed it and she decided to give me a lesson on it the following week. She knows I’m open to learning new things, even if they aren’t “classical” and that I was looking forward to Momentum Fest, and learning about it there.

Intrigued is definitely a word I would use to describe my mind during this lesson. I knew I was making some very interesting faces throughout the private lesson because JoAnn kept checking in with me. She couldn’t tell if I was in pain or enjoying the class.

You move so slow on the Oov. If you think you move slow during regular pilates, you’ll think you were lightning fast compared to this. And you tremble. Holy cow do you feel like every part of your body is heavy!

We ended the lesson with wall work. I had the Oov between me and the wall, trying to lift my legs one at a time. In that moment I realized I am a subtle tucker. I blurted it out, and started laughing. JoAnn began laughing and said, “I’m a subtle tucker too!” It was by far one of the funniest ways to end a lesson.

Momentum Fest

I was front and center for this 7am class because it was a big room with no microphone. I wanted to hear and see everything. The instructor told us that you need to be able to laugh at yourself while on the Oov. You can’t take yourself too seriously because you will probably roll off a time or two. Imagine being on a rounded piece of equipment, moving slowly and not having all feet & hands on the ground. Then add giggling. Ugh! I did fall off. I didn’t care though because I was having fun and learning more.

It points out all your flaws

You can’t hide or push through the movement when you’re on the Oov. It helps find your imbalances and work on them, and lets face it, we all have them. Stability is definitely challenged when on the Oov.

I enjoyed my private lessons and the Momentum Fest lesson so much that I purchased an Oov at Momentum Fest. Do you have one? What do you think of your experience?
